St. Ignatius says, “Just do it … for the greater glory of God.”

saint ignatius soldierSt. Ignatius has famously said, “Pray as though all depends on God, and work as though all depends on you.”

Encapsulated in this solid truth is the very reason for pilgrimage.

Our life and journey through the present world begins and ends with God. He is the one who has set us on the journey, first by creating in birth and then re-creating a new spirit in baptism, the Christian’s “second birth”. And he draws us back to himself, toward the destination of heaven.

But God is not only the beginning & end of our journey, our life’s first meaning & last purpose. He is also the middle of it: in fact, he calls himself “The Way”. To come to be familiar with him, to stay with him, is the beginning of eternal life. Jn. xvii, 3

Come: speak and stay with God, on pilgrimage. Step away from the world and its allurements and distractions. Make pilgrimage to make sense, and to make your way, along the narrow, difficult path to heaven.

“Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it! ” Mt. vii, 13-14

For it is on pilgrimage that we are given time to remember our time on this journey is limited. And, moreover, that Christianity, as Pope Benedict has famously reminded, is to be understood not so much as something institutional, as it is an encounter with Christ himself, who is the curer of our fallen nature and the cause, therefore, of our spiritual health and joy.

Discover that on pilgrimage. Re-learn to pray in total dependence on God, and to walk after & with him as he commands each of us do.
